I had interviewed Kara S Tyler on the blog a few days ago and she had shared the story of how she got to write this book.

Review

Ninja & Bunny's Great Adventure is the story of two sisters Marian and Ruthie who play make-believe like all other kids of their age. Marian is six and Ruthie is a bit older than her. It actually reminded me of the make-believe games I used to play. I even had imaginary pets. :D

The story begins thus :

Marian sat on the front steps surrounded by sidewalk chalk, books, and toys.

But suddenly, Ruthie comes rushing and announces that Princess Isla is in danger ; they need to go to the fairyland to her rescue. Isla is actually her princess doll. Marian, the younger sister, knows that it's all a make-believe game, and yet joins her sister in the operation. They dress up as Ninja and Bunny and wander away into the nearby woods which houses their make-believe fairyland to embark on a lovely little adventure.

The illustrations in the book are very vivid and pretty. This is apparently the first time Sarah Pacetti is illustrating a book completely but she's done a very lovely job.

The language used is pretty simple but replete with some good vocabulary for young readers to learn. The text gave a Flesch Kincaid readability score of 89.5 and a grade level of 2.3, which means it's most suitable for children of ages three and up.

This book is just forty-eight pages long and I finished reading it in almost less than half an hour. The story is fast paced as well. So I think this would make a great bedtime read.

At the end of the adventure, when they have sorted out Princess Isla's problems, their dialogues get deep and mean a lot more than what's implicit :

“There was nothing to be afraid of,” Ninja said. “But running away made it seem so much scarier.” Isla nodded her agreement. “In Fairyland, thoughts have power. Maybe my fear made the creature stronger.”

The story is sure to inspire values of courage and confidence in the young readers and I would definitely recommend this book to little girls. Our girls need books like these and not Barbie dolls.

Ninja & Bunny's Great Adventure is the first book in The Adventures of Ninja & Bunny series and I am really looking forward to the next book.
